I've enjoyed learning so far as it's allowing me to express my artistic side and create clothes that match my style!Liverpool_Fihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06861066556572321448noreply@blogger.comBlogger52125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9024848815719980359.post-57018715263551077782016-05-02T18:18:00.000+01:002016-05-02T18:19:26.794+01:00Catching up... The festival blanket I've neglected this blog terribly over the last... months? year? Well, though it's been intermittent, I have done <i>some </i>sewing along the way, and I'm back on it again now! Time to make a few posts to catch up the blog with my recent makes.<br />
<br />
At Christmas we did Secret Santa at work, and pulled my colleague's name out of the hat. As ever, it was someone I don't know terribly well, but with some digging I found out he is a massive festival attendee, every weekend of the summer he's off somewhere! So, his gift? A festival picnic blanket / tablecloth. Here it is in development...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-TTA10exAC5WTo7fJX7Q942x5LtmmkoHiNUkWReMmvuu2D5giTYYL94Xphu5Y1asfgC9rSIDkPDPKJCXpQsMN3YY4NawxYVYxZBo-8Oam6X17XtpFxwmKeYsNpIc2veUN1-IGA2TutyU2/s1600/IMG-20151206-WA0008.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-TTA10exAC5WTo7fJX7Q942x5LtmmkoHiNUkWReMmvuu2D5giTYYL94Xphu5Y1asfgC9rSIDkPDPKJCXpQsMN3YY4NawxYVYxZBo-8Oam6X17XtpFxwmKeYsNpIc2veUN1-IGA2TutyU2/s320/IMG-20151206-WA0008.jpeg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
In accordance with the tacky / minimal effort theme, I sewed the blanket from bandanas bought on the Internet, double thickness. He seemed utterly bemused (and didn't know it was from me).<br />

It has now expanded beyond the UK, and now covers the EU... (or rather a few in the UK and one in Italy).<br />
<br />
Well... Anyway - got to start small and aim high! <a href="https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zcHY5PAIdscA.k_j-A9QgfE3M" target="_blank">Fabric shops in the EU </a>Liverpool_Fihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06861066556572321448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9024848815719980359.post-7775813843830699692014-05-02T09:34:00.000+01:002014-05-02T10:09:15.034+01:00Experiments in jersey No. 2: The Mod Bandeau Top (Simplicity 1613)Following on from my first experiment in jersey, I've been busy again, with potentially my favourite ever make! This time the fabric has come from Spoonflower - their <a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/modern_jersey" target="_blank">Modern Jersey</a>... Yes it's expensive, but it has four way stretch! And doesn't need overlocking!<br />
<br />
The pattern is Simplicity 1613 (I made E), and was very straightforward. I can imagine I'll try it again at some point, perhaps making up the versions on the right (A, B, C). <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images.patternreview.com/sewing/patterns/simplicity/1613/1613.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://images.patternreview.com/sewing/patterns/simplicity/1613/1613.jpg" height="400" width="277" /></a></div>
I just love this <a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/1219743" target="_blank">fabric design</a>, the colours and style feel a bit like Orla Kiely... Spoonflower is such a brilliant resource! Hopefully it works with the pattern too... <br />
It's hard to see the ruched detailing in the front centre there, but I'm pretty happy with it - all lines up pretty well...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrF5cNpTwYSemrbSAh4NN0Q9Ac0WutNh_EUPBDeQuUusxim2OdWTuPaPp138vuZPpRBTQseQeVoau_xfdc7DRdEo0ywzKfviEzyj9DsHkbjJxwq6sRRCJIRJDITFoxs1MjXvJbbQxPPfLB/s1600/Dress02_A.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrF5cNpTwYSemrbSAh4NN0Q9Ac0WutNh_EUPBDeQuUusxim2OdWTuPaPp138vuZPpRBTQseQeVoau_xfdc7DRdEo0ywzKfviEzyj9DsHkbjJxwq6sRRCJIRJDITFoxs1MjXvJbbQxPPfLB/s1600/Dress02_A.jpg" height="400" width="268" /></a></div>
<br />
... Unlike the side seams! I'm going to keep trying pattern matching, hopefully it'll improve one day! Or I'll find a course to help me to learn :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqPRPjfUrF3i2BRHdU_0cePnw6xfbGAG-xIX1xcJJNAUn7XEG0HGbknEy8MqvrLipG3FiqBXdWPpUzTS1bEcCAcLGHjmB9nraJgWnVehhDJDnXKW5uqmZgSCQx0wD2fgKTrV0YT4ywM1uG/s1600/Dress02_C.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqPRPjfUrF3i2BRHdU_0cePnw6xfbGAG-xIX1xcJJNAUn7XEG0HGbknEy8MqvrLipG3FiqBXdWPpUzTS1bEcCAcLGHjmB9nraJgWnVehhDJDnXKW5uqmZgSCQx0wD2fgKTrV0YT4ywM1uG/s1600/Dress02_C.jpg" height="400" width="268" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
As ever I ordered the minimum amount of fabric, and then regretted it (how many times must I learn this lesson?) Anyway, it explains this weird square of white at the back...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8b4xmfL_eKG1DBm1WySZHC9RHf2TUA-fjVk5K7wUBZG1rA944grBlkYNg56a1mo9Na6Pyy0GbntJH9uZYoPZrIPpa1Y41-9X8lqwZGdFgFfVmzldh8wdw9u_VY2ZI0IJUR0fwpdm-ZOMr/s1600/Dress02_B.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8b4xmfL_eKG1DBm1WySZHC9RHf2TUA-fjVk5K7wUBZG1rA944grBlkYNg56a1mo9Na6Pyy0GbntJH9uZYoPZrIPpa1Y41-9X8lqwZGdFgFfVmzldh8wdw9u_VY2ZI0IJUR0fwpdm-ZOMr/s1600/Dress02_B.jpg" height="400" width="268" /></a></div>
<br />
Overall I'm pretty happy with it, a good learning experience, and I love the outcome - will be perfect for summer days and avoiding strap marks! Next time though I will buy enough fabric!!Liverpool_Fihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06861066556572321448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9024848815719980359.post-80804102030295129122014-04-27T11:40:00.002+01:002014-05-02T09:53:25.881+01:00Experiments in Jersey No 1: Ultimate Wrap DressAfter seven months of neglecting my blog, I'm back! Apologies to anyone who has come looking for updates - I started a new job in October and it has taken me months to adjust to all the travelling. Plus, I've decided I'm a fair weather sewer, only seem to get inspired once the sun has come out! I've sewn once since the last blog post - some Christmas bunting for a colleague's Secret Santa gift - and didn't manage to get a photo done.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Anyway, back to the purpose of today's blog post... The Great British Sewing Bee completely inspired me to try sewing with jersey / stretch fabric... It looked tricky but totally do-able. After scouting around on my favourite fabric website, <a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/welcome" target="_blank">Spoonflower</a>, I placed an order... In the meantime, waiting the month or so for the fabric to arrive I ordered some cheap fabric from <a href="http://www.minervacrafts.com/8.d-4-pinkgreymulti-stripe-print-stretch-jersey-clearance-dress-fabric-per-metre.html" target="_blank">Minerva</a>, to test out just how tricky this new fabric might be...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I went for Sew Over It's <a href="http://shop.sewoverit.co.uk/collections/dressmaking-patterns/products/ultimate-wrap-dress" target="_blank">Ultimate Wrap Dress</a>, mostly because I wanted to support their shop, I've never been but it's local enough, and I do want to get there!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0153/9053/products/wrap_dress_front_460.jpg?v=1381835306" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0153/9053/products/wrap_dress_front_460.jpg?v=1381835306" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So what do you think?? It's certainly a little lower and higher cut than I'd normally go for! Perhaps one for once the legs have adjusted to seeing any daylight! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was incredibly easy to make the dress - no faffing, it was done in just a few hours, using a ballpoint needle... Without an overlocker at hand I'm afraid I left the edges raw so we'll have to see how long it lasts, but I don't especially care - it's not my favourite, nor the most wearable of dresses!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There's one bugbear I have with it too - there's a lot of rippling, on a couple of the hemmed edges. Any more experienced sewers, I'd love your opinions, what went wrong? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I can guarantee the next post won't take so long to get put up - have already made the next project using the Spoonflower jersey I mentioned :) </div>

He loves photography, even displaying and having his work available for sale. So I decided to use up a little more of my camera fabric, to make up some coasters, perfect for a man who also loves his tea... And they're so easy, perfect for a brief tutorial!<br />
<br />
(Disclaimer: I got the idea a while back for these from another blog, but I can't remember where, sorry whoever I have plagarised!!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXai3_38fw6S24YRY2B2A-IPGPSHL078nSbTZzJ9zAsG6nJh_GD5R-iE2OqFbgNsTMkBFDEptG10qqGA8VLtd1qnXyPs9K-FjGh1bR9uUSx4ei1EjOlyqfvUN7if__WOEoj5bg1kbBtpka/s1600/Coasters1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXai3_38fw6S24YRY2B2A-IPGPSHL078nSbTZzJ9zAsG6nJh_GD5R-iE2OqFbgNsTMkBFDEptG10qqGA8VLtd1qnXyPs9K-FjGh1bR9uUSx4ei1EjOlyqfvUN7if__WOEoj5bg1kbBtpka/s320/Coasters1.jpg" width="319" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRSyvcl8MRzXAG03Oq4efJlqdk7KyYVK-wAQsljfWhWOCqNxBhLSCR_A2fzm4KnMKUDTYDhfUbo0n9baw0ZPPLQcE09TgjGW3lbNlpwfQg3YdzB877B3NDK_7caa9dSvVcwSAJUQQN2NkY/s1600/Coasters2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRSyvcl8MRzXAG03Oq4efJlqdk7KyYVK-wAQsljfWhWOCqNxBhLSCR_A2fzm4KnMKUDTYDhfUbo0n9baw0ZPPLQcE09TgjGW3lbNlpwfQg3YdzB877B3NDK_7caa9dSvVcwSAJUQQN2NkY/s320/Coasters2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Tutorial <br />
As always, remember to pre-wash your fabric - especially where tea is concerned you can guarantee they'll need a wash at some point!<br />
To make each coaster cut two squares of fabric and one of wadding 5inch x 5inch.<br />
Place the wadding at the bottom, then the bottom fabric, right side up, then the top fabric, right side down.<br />
Sew using a 5/8ths allowance, along three sides, and a third of the way across the left and right of the last side.<br />
Turn them so the upper fabric faces the right side out. <br />
<br />
Use a pin to bring each of the corners to a point, then, sew the last bit of the final side - *wagging finger* remember to use hand stitching (What? Me? Ummmm.... Well I used a sewing machine because I'm lazy!)<br />
<br />
Finally, do some top-stitching as you see fit!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

After seeing the huge number of beautiful versions on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/colettepatterns/pool/tags/laurel" target="_blank">Flikr</a> I got started, and haven't stopped, with two previous versions, <a href="http://liverpoolfi-sewingitup.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/colette-laurel-number-2.html" target="_blank">here</a>, and <a href="http://liverpoolfi-sewingitup.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/colette-laurel-number-1.html" target="_blank">here</a>!<br />
<br />
This time I wanted to use up another fabric from my stash, I had a metre of this fantastic jungle print fabric from Liberty. Since the moment I saw it, I've thought about Wild Sargasso Sea, the book by Jean Rhys, which tracks the life of the 'mad woman in the attic', Mrs Rochester. The jungle is described as, dark, oppressive, and haunting, and I think this purple and lime green / yellow fabric has some of that feeling about it too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnvCrIT4_9r2xxk4R8PsDdEm7yT0sRahQrh_qKfGnShkadRR1gyPtG5eFFydt0N60p9bGaQjvFRQZl_Jyj1PQ4aa0Zl3dt8X9hIpOghFzPNmIbO75c_Fq4QEZEH4gAWOcTYkpLiuJ59cSo/s1600/WSS4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="312" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnvCrIT4_9r2xxk4R8PsDdEm7yT0sRahQrh_qKfGnShkadRR1gyPtG5eFFydt0N60p9bGaQjvFRQZl_Jyj1PQ4aa0Zl3dt8X9hIpOghFzPNmIbO75c_Fq4QEZEH4gAWOcTYkpLiuJ59cSo/s320/WSS4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Choosing trimmings was tricky, but with a bit of guidance from <a href="http://renee.vanbaar.net/" target="_blank">Renee</a> and Emma via Twitter, I chose some purple bias, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out!<br />

One of my favourite things about this fabric is that it has really rich, autumnal colours, yet it's actually a really fine cotton. Now the shops are all full of clothes for winter, I think it works for that awkward period between seasons. However I have decided - no more Laurels for a while, and not until I have a idea takes it a little away from the basic design! </div>

A time for celebrating with friends and loved ones, and looking good while doing it! At the start of the summer I found the most beautiful dress at Warehouse and decided to do a copy, for some of the events of the coming year. <br />
<br />
The original dress was duck egg blue, medium weight crepe with an interesting cut out at the back. I loved the classic simplicity, and the shape of the skirt, so elegant. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtW5u9CCgenuSmSFTSCNArLKqy4p6bGohlA3oJ145liEcuPgkJYOyuIQ8cX1BSTWUOnTAcpkQa_BeB3RTpp2gP1Juc382i9gpG94cLM2q_gztrHGLD6PVd1r8Mb_-WioHs7TL9HKlcJ5NH/s1600/warehouse.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtW5u9CCgenuSmSFTSCNArLKqy4p6bGohlA3oJ145liEcuPgkJYOyuIQ8cX1BSTWUOnTAcpkQa_BeB3RTpp2gP1Juc382i9gpG94cLM2q_gztrHGLD6PVd1r8Mb_-WioHs7TL9HKlcJ5NH/s1600/warehouse.JPG" /></a></div>
Despite my intention to copy this, my version is pretty different in the end! Made using a light weight crepe, and lined, both fabrics bought from Abakhan's in Mostyn. The pattern, Simplicity 1651, has a a sweetheart neckline, which I just love. The only thing similar to the original is that there's a cut out at the back and a fairly similar skirt! Nonetheless, I'm really happy with it, and learnt lots about lining a dress. It was a real challenge, especially when putting the zip in!<br />

I used two types of bias binding to finish hems on the skirt, each bias matching the tone but not precisely the colour of the lining or crepe - I wanted to have a small contrast for some detail. I think you might be able to see that in this photo. What you can't see is the stiffness of the bias, and how it added to the flutes of the skirt. </div>

<br />
What do you think? A good dress for wedding season? These photos were taken at a lovely couple's wedding in Jersey, it was so beautiful there, and a really special day. I'm pretty sure I'll be using this pattern again in the future! <br />
<br />Liverpool_Fihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06861066556572321448noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9024848815719980359.post-83675824361592962092013-07-29T21:51:00.001+01:002013-07-29T21:51:49.797+01:00Pretty clothes for a pretty girlThese days whenever there's something to celebrate I can feel my stitching fingers twitching! A very good friend of mine (and one of my bridesmaids-to-be) recently gave birth to her second child, a beautiful little girl... A great excuse to get sewing!<br />
<br />
I've got two baby patterns in my arsenal - Simplicity 1889, which I used in my <a href="http://liverpoolfi-sewingitup.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/1889" target="_blank">Stonersaurus and the Monkey shorts</a>, and Simplicity 1921, a new one to me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: right;">
<a href="http://images.patternreview.com/sewing/patterns/simplicity/1889/1889.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://images.patternreview.com/sewing/patterns/simplicity/1889/1889.jpg" width="222" /></a><a href="http://images.patternreview.com/sewing/patterns/simplicity/1921/1921.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://images.patternreview.com/sewing/patterns/simplicity/1921/1921.jpg" width="222" /></a></div>
<br />
So, with the help of some fabric stolen from my Mum, and from my stash, a mix and match project was planned, using the top from 1889, and the pants and hat from 1921. I used the softest cotton and bias binding I had, picking up some perfectly matching gingham ribbon for the hat (Thank you John Lewis!)<br />

And the final verdict... Well the clothes are still a little large for the little one, but unfortunately the hat is TINY - I don't understand where it went wrong!<br />
<br />
I think the hat is destined for a premature baby charity - going to start a little campaign via my Twitter account today to rally us craftivists! In the meantime, I'll get stitching a larger hat, once my machine is back from a service...Liverpool_Fihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06861066556572321448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9024848815719980359.post-44965583877220347252013-05-27T18:20:00.001+01:002013-05-27T18:20:53.217+01:00Colette Laurel Number 2And here's the second Laurel - this time around with the slippiest of materials I've tried so far (I'm not sure what the type is). It's a slight lemony shade, with a grey fish print, picked up from Abakhan's in Mostyn, for a fantastic £2 a metre. Together with the binding I think the top cost me £3 - bargain!<br />

Some major learning is needed with rolled hems too, my first attempt was so far from ideal - luckily it looks like there are a million methods on the internet, so fingers crossed for the next time around!<br />

The fabric was bought months ago but I couldn't find the right pattern, finally, along came Laurel, and it was a perfect match!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/" target="_blank">Spoonflower </a>is a site with millions of fabric designs, where you can choose a pattern designed by someone else, or upload your own, and then get it printed onto material of your choice (or even wallpaper!). This was my first of many purchases from them I think - <a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/1136912" target="_blank">Dustbunnies</a>, by meduzy, printed onto a cotton voile. The fabric got a little damaged by my not having stored it properly after washing - whoops! But I think it's added to the style, looking a bit more rustic ;)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Laurel is the newest pattern by Colette, and thousands of versions have already been made after a competition - you can find more inspiration <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/colettepatterns/pool/tags/laurel" target="_blank">here</a>. <br />
<br />
While mine's a simple version, I'm still delighted with it... The only question I have is... How old is too old for bunnies on your clothes?????<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

An old duvet cover needed to go after becoming shabby, but it had also become lovely and soft with years of wear - time for my first bit of upcycling fabric!<br />

New Look 6984 got rolled out again to make some sleepwear, just as with the <a href="http://liverpoolfi-sewingitup.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/the-sweetie-nightdress.html" target="_blank">sweetie nightie</a>. It's a very dull cotton this time, so more interesting ribbon was needed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZH-8MPNC9uIA20iVxiia55sjFuw5ZCj19OYVmwJpBdHBxdXYZLCVHRBH6yXur6-C16Ryx2Pj4_0ovRCMLaNTbt6IxeEDMLfCfh4ZsWTb-mNd8Ej3J0mcccfFQbN2Ocrek8BEzvPje1CZB/s1600/20130512_205019.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZH-8MPNC9uIA20iVxiia55sjFuw5ZCj19OYVmwJpBdHBxdXYZLCVHRBH6yXur6-C16Ryx2Pj4_0ovRCMLaNTbt6IxeEDMLfCfh4ZsWTb-mNd8Ej3J0mcccfFQbN2Ocrek8BEzvPje1CZB/s320/20130512_205019.jpg" width="139" /></a></div>
<br />
I chose a nice grosgrain ribbon, which I hoped might make the nightie look less dull, more rustic...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihTMYsRd3ncSiWzHVGnhe71dGhrLFzzENF4wjABr6Tc_7Zqi_wWX0Yuat_b3ubgQXlMyhgH5za-Hn0bVXh3ubmBjqZ-CrFnaT8-L9nn8PdT6GeoZ3gafaK19M5-xk4FuBtpylJW3oRgZEQ/s1600/20130512_204625.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihTMYsRd3ncSiWzHVGnhe71dGhrLFzzENF4wjABr6Tc_7Zqi_wWX0Yuat_b3ubgQXlMyhgH5za-Hn0bVXh3ubmBjqZ-CrFnaT8-L9nn8PdT6GeoZ3gafaK19M5-xk4FuBtpylJW3oRgZEQ/s320/20130512_204625.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
A bit of detailing at the waist, and at the back to add marginal bits of interest!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjNOw88FQzLiaeKaGpRS2pvvC1wnMKT_PwKb24vkI2Xk9GdNFa3OgoOrVCOD3Yrkpvgln4dsJI8CrV8q3lJrssM_KqJtfpl8P-HtEnkSTttQOu2JcwpyvzFzhfhldmMQPBRwcaRj2yloqE/s1600/20130512_204933.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjNOw88FQzLiaeKaGpRS2pvvC1wnMKT_PwKb24vkI2Xk9GdNFa3OgoOrVCOD3Yrkpvgln4dsJI8CrV8q3lJrssM_KqJtfpl8P-HtEnkSTttQOu2JcwpyvzFzhfhldmMQPBRwcaRj2yloqE/s320/20130512_204933.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
While this is certainly not my favourite project, I did learn a few things... Grosgrain ribbon needs the addition of heat to seal the ends, cutting diagonally isn't enough. In addition, I've realised this pattern isn't for me. Both nighties gape at the back, despite me using the smallest size in the packet - absolutely fine for a nightie, but I won't be making this as a dress. Think it'll be one to pass on to a fellow stitcher soon :)<br />

I've been experiencing a severe case of sewists block while attempting to plough my way through <a href="http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/liz" target="_blank">Liz</a>, another of Burda Style's blouses with almost incomprehensible instructions! (Some major studying might have contributed too, but hey...)<br />
<br />
Thanks to some help from the forums, a fair bit of swearing and a long long time, Liz and I are finally done. Excitingly I absolutely love it, even the collar works better than my ill-fated attempt at JJ (perhaps I've actually learnt something?)<br />
<br />
Anyway, I spotted this fabric designed by the potter Grayson Perry at Shaukat back last summer, and kept hold of it trying to figure out a plan. Since then I've had a bit of a read of cult-horror writer H.B. Lovecraft's books, and for some reason I can't explain, to me, those faces are those of his infamous frog people from the Shadow Over Innsmouth - I think it's something to do with the headpieces, rather than the faces themselves!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuecv6V7nAuTjYKdtZlguo8sUDddMhvaTwLvjmH5Ce4cdEco6ihn44zz01m8-lP7esvWggjbPSKznbXolA2KE2HUCdCQoHMEF0s0WsOmmbg53gtxr1BnQKO3QxKceaZe3gsBOZToSCxgDf/s1600/cranford.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuecv6V7nAuTjYKdtZlguo8sUDddMhvaTwLvjmH5Ce4cdEco6ihn44zz01m8-lP7esvWggjbPSKznbXolA2KE2HUCdCQoHMEF0s0WsOmmbg53gtxr1BnQKO3QxKceaZe3gsBOZToSCxgDf/s320/cranford.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
In the end I chose Liz because it looked like a comfy shape, a slight vintage feel to it, and the possibility of using the shape for either work or weekend. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Unfortunately after carrying the buttons with me in my wallet for half a year I lost
one, so when I got round to finishing there was the opportunity to look
again... As if all the fabric wasn't enough I decided it needed one last
finishing touch - a contrast button.<br />
<br />
I do feel a bit busty in the finished product, but overall think it looks pretty unusual, and think it'll be really wearable.<br />

WychburyIt's almost Remembrance Sunday, every year I buy an official poppy and every year I've lost or broken it within the day. A handbag, a seatbelt, a coat - whatever, I'm clumsy and that's how it goes!<br />
<br />
This year I picked up a handcrafted one from <a href="http://folksy.com/shops/Wychbury" target="_blank">Wychbury </a>to supplement my official one. Wychbury donate £1.50 for each of the poppies they sell, they're beautiful and will last me a lot longer than the paper ones!<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Way back in August, a good friend had her birthday and I decided (was told?) to make her something as a gift! The criteria: It needed to have a cherry print (like my <a href="http://www.burdastyle.com/projects/block-summer-dress" target="_blank">first dress</a> that she liked), and the cut would need to be her style. Now, she has lots of super-girly clothes, is petite and super slim. So I needed to find a pattern that would fit, was flirty enough, and would hopefully match the rest of her wardrobe... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After far too long deliberating I came across this pattern from Vogue, V8295. It's too long, but I thought it might work with a lot of shortening and some cute fabric.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="320" src="http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/filebin/images/product_images/Full/V8295.jpg" width="303" /></div>
<br />
Supplies for this one are from right across Britain! I picked up the cherry fabric at Mostyn's Abakhan Fabrics, the lining came from Brick Lane in London and the lace trim from Watson and Thorntons in Shrewsbury.<br />
<br />
I chose to just drop the hem band to keep the length short, but think it'll probably need more trimming to get it the right length for her. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIT4aGFwpeWb8RP6kU9cNYiHbmgtrZDLHkE3yvD3V6Ssno49BIfjAeixVjCiFRsRTCSmsE9csRFNCdI7U9-y-GU_jraVk7m6bHHuASoODzOefyPpOq425f42TJ4_nvIeqLCVilCLcNFwT8/s1600/DSC_0805.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIT4aGFwpeWb8RP6kU9cNYiHbmgtrZDLHkE3yvD3V6Ssno49BIfjAeixVjCiFRsRTCSmsE9csRFNCdI7U9-y-GU_jraVk7m6bHHuASoODzOefyPpOq425f42TJ4_nvIeqLCVilCLcNFwT8/s320/DSC_0805.JPG" width="256" /></a></div>

And so, the final verdict? Well she seems to like it! I'm absolutely convinced it won't fit her (the dreaded unpredictable 4 inches of 'ease'), but fingers crossed! I'll upload some pictures of her wearing it if / when she sends them over.<br />

Last year at Christmas I made the decision to make my own dress for the
festivities, as a way of celebrating all that I'd learnt about sewing in
the past year. I picked up Cynthia Rowley dress 2497 free with Sew
magazine which I had a subscription for at the time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG0BqZP3t5WmbUIhYpn6GpqNU4Epn8_-AXNaW47jdjYGka7H5Gsn9XR1dQ9GieskOs_1IEprxLmDfsDZPHoXXPNnEcMFCqfiAptDeWEn9Epnl1B2sycRpdb8U36kVER5A_I5WoxGiHah0/s320/Screen+shot+2010-12-09+at+8.56.43+PM.png" /></div>
<br />
All went nice and slowly for the few weeks, and then BOOM it was the night before the Christmas party and I only had the base colour cut out, the contrast fabric hadn't been chosen and it was all going to pot!<br />
<br />
After staying up until midnight and stitching it was finally done... the shoddiest dress I've yet made, a bright red zip, threads hanging off, not one bit of overlocking! Thankfully the fabric was just £2 p/m from a market stall in Horsham, so it didn't feel like I wasted too much money. The navy contrast was just kicking around from the stash.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuZCQMPpDxjAlCTYtsmOoj3ydJBn6JpAmHJBh0LncG9xOzsuFRAbJdmZly7wxsU2PBK0wcb__VrwkbmzK7-NdShjDoeZ_6FXmVi3NjBfecLNfaxOlxfKUAA3TVzRdVzFz2VY9azQz1ODg3/s1600/DSC_0787.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuZCQMPpDxjAlCTYtsmOoj3ydJBn6JpAmHJBh0LncG9xOzsuFRAbJdmZly7wxsU2PBK0wcb__VrwkbmzK7-NdShjDoeZ_6FXmVi3NjBfecLNfaxOlxfKUAA3TVzRdVzFz2VY9azQz1ODg3/s320/DSC_0787.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
Luckily for the first wearing it was dark so the threads couldn't be seen, everyone thought the ruffles couldn't possibly be done by me as a second dress, so they concluded the bright red zip must be a design element, until I confessed. Christmas day was another matter, but what's a trailing thread or 50 between family ;)<br /><br />
A fantastically easy pattern to make up, but once you've done it once there's little incentive to make it again, I think it could look very samey to do another. What do you think guys?Liverpool_Fihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06861066556572321448noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9024848815719980359.post-57125505182514050162012-10-01T20:05:00.001+01:002012-10-01T20:05:45.025+01:00Self-Stitched September: Week 4Just one wear again this week... Thoroughly boring to wear the same blouse again, but felt an utter lack of inspiration!<br />
<br />
Anyway I wore this to university and then on to deliver a talk to a philosophy group. A busy day - you might be able to tell this was taken at almost midnight after the talk and a pint of local ale - so tired! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb1PjKrrmeS-rtWvStzIpDLBWUDR8nj9_UIGDY4FmeB1qOjbljfSxVtke9rQOysJ2TRkfzYs5SiiuK_01CZXJ_PZxWGPOppWNEwNZJugAPThtkyIpxEUL8qy6J0vxz3uwq_3ZY4LhSHo4G/s1600/SSS4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb1PjKrrmeS-rtWvStzIpDLBWUDR8nj9_UIGDY4FmeB1qOjbljfSxVtke9rQOysJ2TRkfzYs5SiiuK_01CZXJ_PZxWGPOppWNEwNZJugAPThtkyIpxEUL8qy6J0vxz3uwq_3ZY4LhSHo4G/s400/SSS4.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
Self Stitched September all done then! Phew - it's made me realise that I'm bored of all my makes. Think the pace of stitching will be slowed down until the thesis is done...Liverpool_Fihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06861066556572321448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9024848815719980359.post-69628231084561759422012-09-24T23:27:00.000+01:002012-09-24T23:27:57.896+01:00The sweetie nightieI always thought that making your own sleepwear was a silly idea - why make something that people don't see, that you can pick up so easily from a high street store for cheaper than the fabric would cost? Well, then I saw some fabric and trims in Abakhan's in Mostyn, and well... I changed my mind! About £3p/m, it still works out to be as pricey as just buying off the shelf, but I fell in love! And there was lots of lace trims! It was a match made in heaven...<br />
<br />
After weeks of searching I decided on New Look 6984. It's actually a dress pattern, but all the nightie patterns I came across were too frumpy or naff!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.jaycotts.co.uk/acatalog/L6984.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://www.jaycotts.co.uk/acatalog/L6984.jpg" width="222" /></a></div>
<br />
I think it turned out just as I had hoped - sweet and pretty. It's different from anything you'd buy in the shops, yet it's practical too... Only one alteration to the instructions was needed - adding velcro rather than a button - for comfort. Always important to remember that the scratchy side faces up to avoid irritated skin. This time I remembered!<br />

Held at <a href="http://www.actonscott.com/" target="_blank">Acton Scott Museum</a>, where they filmed Victorian Farm, the class promised the chance to learn about corsetry, draft your own pattern and learn how to make one. I've always been interested in Victorian history - the judgemental religiousity, politics and fashion is fascinating. Wikipedia has an excellent <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_the_Victorian_era" target="_blank">brief glimpse</a> at some of the relevant women's history that interests me. (As an aside, <a href="http://www.mrwhicher.com/" target="_blank">The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: The Murder at Road Hill House</a> provides an excellent glimpse into some of the social history as well as being a ripping good yarn!)<br />
<br />
Anyway, back on topic. Being in Shropshire, the venue was incredible, with a stunning view from our room. The large glass windows did mean that we were watched like monkeys in a zoo by the passers by!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

As well as the actual process of construction, we also discussed the history - whether the corset was a method of control / repression in women (and similarities with stilettos). We also had a chance to understand more about the fashions of corsets at the time, and how they evolved through the period.<br />
<br />
I found pattern making stretched my brain further than it's used to being stretched. I think I was the most novice of the sewers there so I learnt more of the basics (like adding seam allowances) than other attendees. Sarah was wonderfully patient though and talked us through each step carefully.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLFyMb6pTjXem4IU21td-nyO1f6QDGJn5T95P626xzsn-9VUq_Lc4zmMyjtizEDC7-XK1-FvaoHTdf5PU42-ZJsIaman9A9UhAhtKUXET1hfvHILRDHnWBwoyo3BlQEnfr5QNTB3O27JRI/s1600/2012-09-18+11.51.56.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLFyMb6pTjXem4IU21td-nyO1f6QDGJn5T95P626xzsn-9VUq_Lc4zmMyjtizEDC7-XK1-FvaoHTdf5PU42-ZJsIaman9A9UhAhtKUXET1hfvHILRDHnWBwoyo3BlQEnfr5QNTB3O27JRI/s320/2012-09-18+11.51.56.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
In the end I'm pretty happy with my draft - happy to report that I could still breathe and sit down, though the it squashed more than providing uplift! (Adjustments required)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjScl3JNo35NMc7op2cQ6zg-UdMx6yLlOrGbHGzKZ5J4Ap9_p9-0kdNY3jf26o_MFtzqHMCqoCIXU1Y3fGEX5Iq9AaJRCrz2Ow1SuT8uA2OXNlwa1z4CjLCggqvjvX4ldGkUnlbkU7_I1-P/s1600/DSC_0355.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjScl3JNo35NMc7op2cQ6zg-UdMx6yLlOrGbHGzKZ5J4Ap9_p9-0kdNY3jf26o_MFtzqHMCqoCIXU1Y3fGEX5Iq9AaJRCrz2Ow1SuT8uA2OXNlwa1z4CjLCggqvjvX4ldGkUnlbkU7_I1-P/s320/DSC_0355.JPG" title="Corset draft" width="214" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Though I think the others would be able to take the next step alone, I'm going to get in touch with Sarah sometime next year to book in for a day to make the final product. I've never tried to use boning, so I think I'll need to get some significant help for that!<br />
<br />
A fantastic day, highly recommended to all Intermediate sewers! Saturday 8th September, a trip to the Paralympics to watch the wheelchair fencing, wearing <a href="http://liverpoolfi-sewingitup.blogspot.com/2012/02/jj-and-i.html" target="_blank">JJ 6009</a>. This blouse has so much potential, but everytime I wear it I end up feeling so frustrated. The button keeps popping open and the collar is just so annoying. I think it'll be going to a clothes swap as soon as I can get over the hours of frustration that went into making it! At least the sport was good, and so inspirational - I really want to give fencing a go soon!</div>

Monday 10th September, my last full week on placement, wearing the <a href="http://liverpoolfi-sewingitup.blogspot.com/2012/07/try-again-dress.html" target="_blank">Try again dress (Project Runway 2588)</a>, with a bright orange cardigan. This is actually my second time around with 1980s pattern New Look 6837, one I picked up in a charity shop. Whilst the packaging is all 1980s, the clothes the pattern makes seem to look pretty classic to me. The instructions are clear and straightforward. The only strange thing is the sizing. Last time the top I made was too big and had to be given away, this time the skirt is a little too snug!</div>

<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
Despite having very few of my own makes I've decided to take part in
Self Stitched September, a challenge lots of sewist bloggers have taken
part in the last few years. Like Me Made May, the idea seems to have been
originally conceived by Zo of Collette Patterns, though this year they
seem to have been quiet on organising it. Here's a link to her <a href="http://sozowhatdoyouknow.blogspot.co.uk/2011/08/self-stitched-sept-11-join-me.html" target="_blank">post last year</a>.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
This year I'm not aiming to wear something I made every day, just most days, here's the first week's line up...</div>

4th September I wore my favourite blouse <a href="http://liverpoolfi-sewingitup.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/new-look-6963.html" target="_blank">New Look 6963</a>, the original version. 5th I had a break with nothing else clean / suitable for work!<br />

6th September, for a meeting and birthday drinks with friends I wore my other New Look 6963, the <a href="http://liverpoolfi-sewingitup.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/japanese-blossom-new-look-6963.html" target="_blank">Japanese Blossom Blouse</a>. <br />

This is actually my second go with <a href="http://sewplicity.blogspot.com/2011/09/tutorial-dslr-camera-lens-case.html?m=1" target="_blank">these</a> instructions, though the first didn't make this blog yet. <br />
<br />
This time instead of cardboard for the base I used two layers of felt, not enough to protect against a big hit, but enough to protect the screen on the back. Last time cardboard didn't do a great job and just became damaged and added unnecessary bulk.<br />
<br />
I found this fantastic <a href="http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180921632307?var=480173692499&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649" target="_blank">fabric </a>on Ebay - I love the retro print, perfect for a digital camera!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLDvIVD6RbqE6k7MypOz3Dg8Ykr0IJansKnIFmqRcIDDZ_v63gd0HTvF_vfpVYw1uTIAjkZ0TMhJF21tKUskIA-ibZ2jSBK2XKuar7Ql3Y5e12CSW1gOL0HD97TzeKzQ1lYFaJPK54BLV1/s1600/bag3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLDvIVD6RbqE6k7MypOz3Dg8Ykr0IJansKnIFmqRcIDDZ_v63gd0HTvF_vfpVYw1uTIAjkZ0TMhJF21tKUskIA-ibZ2jSBK2XKuar7Ql3Y5e12CSW1gOL0HD97TzeKzQ1lYFaJPK54BLV1/s320/bag3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I chose to use it on the inside - a hidden detail in an otherwise quite anonymous bag. I just love interestingly detailed lining. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The cord ends were sealed with a knot, and then clear nail varnish. So far that's been enough to hold back the fraying, and this time the ends don't feel too sharp or scratchy. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5AOS9QkqYyKzVHKKox-aYMKgGnvgN2griT4z4TrVWokOsKB5sOEBVl0G04Gf30zQNQUCsIz2pEXBuMtoxORk8zkv5YPdLCixviXb-lI_iyWcoa-tf2hYJhfhh0Vq2YUop4pkXlKBxQ_XQ/s1600/bag1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="270" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5AOS9QkqYyKzVHKKox-aYMKgGnvgN2griT4z4TrVWokOsKB5sOEBVl0G04Gf30zQNQUCsIz2pEXBuMtoxORk8zkv5YPdLCixviXb-lI_iyWcoa-tf2hYJhfhh0Vq2YUop4pkXlKBxQ_XQ/s400/bag1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
All the overcasting was done with my sewing machine, and turned out really well. I also slipped in one of my 'Hand made with love' ribbons for a detail. I really love adding these, and will need to buy more very soon!<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC9lbEBOI95oZDaQaf1MW1bxsZAda1nAvBA5VGvQPDFYcKeqW-VpSmMWtHEG_NP1Yq0U978iR1F7sYKajEfLZqv0gerYSJluAHZd-t40gNCnVW4zHEU0wWsPhVYu1Z2I5Ug4pnZOk8oSwz/s1600/_MG_1258.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a></div>
In an ongoing bid to give original and affordable gifts I've been busy stitching! These shorts were made using Simplicicty 1889. As you can see there were lots of variations available, but I stuck with the simple D shorts. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.sewingworld.co.uk/1889t.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://www.sewingworld.co.uk/1889t.jpg" width="222" /></a></div>
I used what I think are some amazing fabrics and buttons. This dinosaur fabric (which I'm calling Stonersaurus owing to the suspicious looking ferns) was picked up super-cheap from Birmingham Rag Market, though I don't remember how much for. I've got a slightly paler version too, so I'm hoping to use them together for a nice contrast fabric sometime. <br />
<br />

Isn't it super cute? I also found this amazing button in a sewing shop near my workplace...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvP6Kdfk0r-Pv42IJCPh-SgfCOrh7T5zDKRk-5Huph4zarPA7aDARtzKHtOImILNcw_EL5NesiuepO8CZI3GMLSarqYMnK0hIukkzqGDKQpV-6ahAxwzEZeTSUOT40YBj3repVZGLket-Q/s1600/_MG_1260.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvP6Kdfk0r-Pv42IJCPh-SgfCOrh7T5zDKRk-5Huph4zarPA7aDARtzKHtOImILNcw_EL5NesiuepO8CZI3GMLSarqYMnK0hIukkzqGDKQpV-6ahAxwzEZeTSUOT40YBj3repVZGLket-Q/s320/_MG_1260.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And HURRAH, looks like my Curious George fabric has finally all gone! I do love it, but it's getting a bit samey to sew with! I'm wondering though if these trousers are just a bit too ridiculous... Hopefully they'll fit for one of the to-be parents... Do you think they're ok for both genders, just boys or girls? Or really, are they ones for the charity shop?<br />
<br />

When picking up the dinosaur buttons I also happened across this ribbon, which I'm going to use for all my projects (at least until it runs out) - it's on the Stonersaurus shorts too. Long term I'd love to print my own ribbon, but you know what? I have better things to do right now!!<br />

Around 18months ago a former colleague wrote on Facebook about her friend who made jewellery, and did any of us want to buy her things? Of course I did! I've worn this necklace so often since I bought it, and its unusual design frequently gets compliments.</div>

I recently found her website, <a href="http://www.musabamba.com/" target="_blank">Musa Bamba </a>and I confess I'm planning my next purchase, one of her lovely unusual bags.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This bag has everything I love about crafted items, it's beautiful, unique, and buying supports an independent crafter using her skills. How long till pay day?? </div>
